Driving past this mock Georgian farmhouse out in the Oxfordshire countryside, you would not think that there might be a lower ground floor with a home cinema design that seats 20 and a party room design that could hold at least 50 guests, housing a billiards table, 1980’s electronic games such as Pacman and pinball, a DJ booth, cigar and wine room and much much more!
The house was built from the ground up, which gave the client the opportunity to really make use of the basement area and it was to this end that the Party room was conceived. The client had some very focused ideas about what he was after, being inspired in particular by the Soho Farmhouse which wasn’t too far away from the new property. He was looking for distressed vintage style furniture, fun 1980’s video games and super cool lighting. The space was very large and the design looked to create smaller cosier areas without compartmentalising and throwing up walls. Several iterations were offered until the final option was approved. The creative director came up with the idea of the also using architectural elements from the London underground tube stations as part of the concept after visiting CP Hart whose showroom is under the arches.
Firstly the main area was divided into 3 spaces, namely the Games, the bar and the relaxation areas, accessed by some very wide steps. The steps were deepened to act a little more like the seating in an amphitheatre and we added soft plush leather banquette seating here. We vaulted the ceiling in the central main space to emulate an old London Underground arch space, which took weeks to tile in very slim bricks. Once down the steps, you arrive at the bar and DJ booth. We created a large curved joinery piece in dark timber, with leather inset panels using handles made from plumbing spare parts…all for the authenticity. At high level we had a large open shelving unit all with integrated LED lighting and mirror back panels. We further designed a portable bar/DJ booth with a walnut carcass and embossed burgundy leather and brass trim. Expanding the colour scheme of green, red and gold, we added some luxe glass pendants in emerald with matching leather bar chairs.
To the left we created a room that is dominated by a huge bespoke serpentine sofa, upholstered in a gold green type velvet. The sofa was made in many parts so that it could be easily installed. We added a vast number of overstuffed scatter cushions in a range of green and gold and added a luxurious green velvet curtain. To further enhance the underground feeling, we had a wall covering made looking like a distressed LU emblem with the clients name as a station name, embellished with a faded timber plank background and faux green embossed tiles below. Lighting ranges from floor up-lighting that highlights the columns, supercool pendants from Moooi and a statement brass chain mail curtain. For fun we added 1980s game machine including a shooting range, Pacman and pinball and the scheme was finished off with low comfortable chairs and cocktail tables. On the right we added a games room to include a pool table, poseur tables and chairs and a large TV.
