This master bedroom design was part of a much larger house project, in the leafy area of Notting Hill, one of the golden post codes of London. Long associated with bohemian chic, pop stars such as Mick Jagger, Portobello market and the world famous carnival, the area has seen a steep rise in status from its decadent history. René Dekker Design was engaged by the client as the principle interior designer.
The house, a very pretty late Victorian home just off Pembridge square, had had much of its original features removed over the years and part of London’s top interior design studio’s scope of work was to revive the interiors and bring them back to their original glory. Our first job was to research skirtings, panelling and cornices and to elevate the room with more classical features. Many iterations were rendered up but slowly the room started developing into the formal space the client was looking for. We further developed and sketched up the door design and architraves together with the wall beading and even designed the decorative door insert panels and the bespoke bronze door handles.
We then sourced and presented many wall cover options, everything from printed papers to gilded and hand painted options. None seemed to be right for the client but while looking for some fabrics for another room, the creative director stumbled upon an embroidered silk and hit upon the idea to have this paper backed so that it could be hung as a wall covering. The client was delighted as it really had an abundance of colours but was also subtle in its presence. Colours were chosen from the fabric palette and then translated onto the beading and other timber and plaster elements, layering to what was to become a tranquil and elegant bedroom.
