This client really wanted colour interior design throughout his new home, a farmhouse set on 100 acres in a small valley in Oxfordshire. Nowhere was this more prevalent than in the snug, the informal TV/ relaxation room at the back of the house. With huge windows overlooking the undulating countryside, this space is filled with light and life.
Our first objective was to plan the space. Our original concept of a fluid shape banquette was turned down in favour of a more square design. It was important that the deeper seating was directly in front of the TV with more standard depth elsewhere. Getting the height of the sofa right in conjunction with the height of the TV was even more important. We also integrated 13amp and c USB power into the sofa frame for easy access to plug in technology. Once this was agreed, we worked on the hard landscaping in particular the wall unit. We revised our initial idea and opted instead for floating shelves, in high gloss teal, on the wall cover background. The base unit which housed some local AV equipment was finished in velum in the same teal.
Our next objective was to choose a fun wall covering, one that would be a little bit cheeky and very colourful, but still high end design and we settled on an Arté vinyl with a turquoise background and a bold flamingo print in hot pink. On the two adjoining walls we chose a plum coloured vinyl that mimicked silk. The team at award winning interior design studio, René Dekker Design, then had a field day collecting samples of fabric in velvets and cottons, with animal and floral prints in a multitude of colours, to match the wall covering. The final choice was the extra deep carpet, accessory furniture such as the cool little ottomans, the Martini tables and the accessories.
