London House was a huge high end residential project for our studio, taking no less than 12 years to complete. In part due to the economic crash in 2008 that meant not only the main contractor but some of the sub-contractors went out of business and in part the size and scope of work that went into this 24 000 square foot home. The Danish client wanted nothing less than spectacular in every room and of course the main reception room design, in which this 8th wonder of the world was located, would be the jewel in the crown. Initial concepts looked at interesting finishes that could be used on the wall as this was a kidney shaped wall with the fireplace being visible from both the Reception room and the Dining room. As we had already presented quite a lot of polished plaster samples, we hit on the idea of using mosaic. We approached the two leading Italian glass mosaic companies for ideas but costs were astronomical due to the shape and size of the wall not to mention that this design would be seamless, with no start or finish. Through our relationship with an Italian furniture company, we were introduced to Mutaforma, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of silicone mosaic. The product was not only better value for money but super lightweight and more environmentally friendly than the usual glass version. They produced several colour renders for us based on one of their standard designs and colour matched to our fabrics. The finished product is a marvellous combination creating a sparkling modern animal print effect. The company sent over a specialist mosaic tiler for the project and the final touch was the glitter mosaic that took the design to another level. Whilst the wall was the main attraction, the lighting did not play second fiddle with the two working together to create pure fantasy.
