This inspirational living room formed a central element of a comprehensive, whole house refurbishment in Belsize Park, London. The high-end home, an early 20th century residence, was reimagined to meet the demands of contemporary living while preserving its architectural integrity. The living room, bathed in natural light, offered an ideal canvas for a bold yet refined design narrative. The brief called for a space that balanced comfort with visual impact, and the final result reflects a considered approach to both spatial planning and decorative detail.
As part of the renovation, extensive building works were undertaken. These included the installation of underfloor heating and air conditioning to improve thermal comfort, alongside new electrics and replacement double glazed windows for enhanced energy efficiency. The original fireplace, though charming, was removed to make way for a streamlined gas alternative, better suited to the updated aesthetic. New cornicing was added to restore architectural definition, subtly framing the room without overpowering it.
The finishes were selected to create a layered and tactile environment. An oak parquet floor grounds the space with warmth and structure, while the chimney breast was treated with a shiny stucco polished plaster to introduce a sculptural quality. Walls were dressed in a sophisticated vinyl covering from Rubelli, chosen for its understated elegance and textural depth. These elements work in concert to support the room’s focal point: the Oyster Stucco rug, designed by Dale Chihuly for The Rug Company. Its swirling composition and nuanced palette informed the entire colour scheme, acting as both anchor and inspiration.
The custom-designed joinery elevates the room’s functionality and visual coherence. High gloss lacquered display units with brass detailing were installed, offering both storage and a platform for curated objects. A contrasting wall covering was applied within the joinery niches to add dimension and highlight the pieces displayed. This bespoke approach ensured that every element served a purpose, whether practical or aesthetic.
The project was led by a top London interior designers René Dekker Design, who have a reputation for delivering luxury residential interiors that are both distinctive and enduring. The client sought a professional with expertise in high-end home renovation, and the result demonstrates a clear understanding of how to integrate architectural upgrades with decorative finesse. The living room now serves as a testament to thoughtful design, where craftsmanship and concept are seamlessly aligned.
The Chihuly-inspired living room stands as a successful example of how a single artistic element can guide an entire scheme, resulting in a space that feels both personal and elevated.
