Family Room Chandelier

With double volume proportions and a ceiling height of over 5 metres combined with triple aspect windows, this family room design at our London House Project needed a statement lighting piece of gargantuan proportions.  After a lot of research and a chance meeting at a London Design week lighting installation show we settled on an innovative Cape Town based lighting company called Willow Lamp. The company re-imagined the traditional chandelier using laser cut metal and metal beaded components integrated with spot and strip LED lighting into modern chandelier design.  The room was occupied by a large corner sofa for watching TV as well as having an informal dining table and chairs.  The first design, based on another one of their standard designs, tried to create a single light piece to cover both areas but ended up being too large and cumbersome so the concept evolved using the Faraway tree to become a full scale immersive forest of trees of architectural proportions.  A smaller component of the two art works sits above the dining table and measures 2.4 x 1.5m and has a drop of 2.4m.  It has two suspended ‘cups’ that allow for hidden spot lighting to shine upwards into the canopy, giving a completely different type of mood to if they were shining downwards.  The design evolved further into a series of spiralling tree branches suspended at multiple levels like a gnarled and knotted enchanted forest.  The branches were also developed with LED edge lighting with both light sources on separate circuits.  The larger of the two installation was hung above the sofa  and weighed almost 800 kilograms which meant a lot of pre-preparation went into strengthening the concrete structure to hold it.  The end result was a unique floating artwork of light.
