{"id":1718,"date":"2020-08-05T07:00:32","date_gmt":"2020-08-05T07:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1718"},"modified":"2021-06-09T18:04:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T18:04:15","slug":"chelsea-moving-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/chelsea-moving-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Chelsea &#8211; moving on"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After the heyday of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/chelsea-a-design-history\"><strong>1960s<\/strong><\/a>, London\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/chelsea-pied-a-terre\/\">Chelsea<\/a><\/strong> saw yet another cultural incarnation, the area in the 1970s becoming a hub for rebellious and unconventional young creatives. This was where Punks and New Romantics \u00a0gathered. The latter could be seen hanging out around Sloane Square tube with their Trevor Sorbie \u201cwedge\u201d haircuts, while the former loitered on street benches along King\u2019s Road, sporting Mohicans.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Music and fashion jostled for position in Chelsea, the vanguards for both being Vivienne Westwood and her business partner Malcom McLaren, with their first store, Let It Rock. They used design motifs such as Union Jack prints, oversized safety pins and leather covered in zips and studs. More than 40 years later these iconic ideas are still popular in fashion as well as interiors today.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Chelsea Drugstore (inspired by Saint Germain\u2019s \u2018Le Drugstore\u2019 in Paris) was the pinnacle of cool, selling everything from records to pharmaceuticals. The store ran a \u2018flying squad\u2019 motorbike delivery service the riders of which were women in purple catsuits. Today, sadly, the iconic shop is now home to a well-known fast food chain.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/pink-bedroom-colourful.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/pink-bedroom-colourful.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/pink-bedroom-colourful-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/pink-bedroom-colourful-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/pink-bedroom-colourful-640x403.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the early 80s, Margaret Thatcher had been elected Prime Minister, the stock market was booming, and \u201cYoung and Upwardly Mobile Professionals\u201d dominated the Chelsea scene. Complete with shoulder pads and pearl necklaces, Yuppies usurped the cutting edge art and music scene of King\u2019s Road (and its neighbouring Bohemian BIBA enclave in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/kensington-mansion-flat\/\"><strong>Kensington<\/strong><\/a>). Yet again, the area was witnessing another change. \u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, at one end of the King\u2019s Road is Peter Jones, The Royal Court Theatre, The Saatchi Gallery and Duke of York Square, all offering a feast of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/contemporary-moscow-villa\/\">contemporary design<\/a><\/strong>, culture and retail options. At the other end of this famous street, is another design Mecca. Trot past the famous antiques markets and auction houses of Lots Road and you\u2019ll come to the developed Chelsea Harbour area, and the jewel in its crown, The Chelsea Design Centre.&nbsp; Here, the incredible collection of<strong> <\/strong>interior design shops showcase their wonderful world of eclectic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/length-lining-finishing-touches\/\">fabrics<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/using-texture-interior-design\/\">textiles<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/category\/wall-coverings\/\">wall coverings<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/table-talk\/\">furniture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/throwing-some-light-on-the-subject\/\">lighting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/category\/floor-coverings\/\">floor coverings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/tile-flooring\/\">tiles<\/a>,<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/category\/accessories\/\">accessories<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp; It is a treasure trove for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/rene-dekker-designer\/\">luxury interior designers<\/a><\/strong> looking for the latest and hottest trends.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally built in in 1987, The Chelsea Design Centre offers arguably the best in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/\">interior design<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/christmas-decoration-tips\/\">decoration<\/a><\/strong> in the country, possibly the world. Its three glass domes, contain 120 showrooms and more than 600 luxury brands &#8211; the largest such space in Europe. Everyone from paint manufacturers, fabrics outlets and bespoke furniture designers to the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) bookshop are housed here in this design-rich corner.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/teal-chair-curtains-flowers.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/teal-chair-curtains-flowers.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/teal-chair-curtains-flowers-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/teal-chair-curtains-flowers-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/teal-chair-curtains-flowers-640x403.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/blog\/american-beauty-new-york-style\/\">Classic contemporary interiors<\/a><\/strong> to cutting-edge; minimalism to opulence; urbane sophistication&nbsp;to rural retreat, every floor boasts an array of beautiful fabrics, furniture, lighting, wallcoverings, flooring, accessories and trimmings. All rooms are catered for from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/luxury-kitchens\/\">kitchens<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renedekker.co.uk\/luxury-bathrooms\/\">bathrooms<\/a><\/strong>, to outdoor living and many of the design houses also create bespoke pieces for their clients.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although unrecognisable from its 1960s swinging London roots and punk heyday, Chelsea still retains a strong sense of rich history giving the neighbourhood its deep character and charm with a mixture of bohemian cottages, stucco fronted houses and beautiful garden squares.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mark the homes and workplaces of famous people who have lived in Chelsea are the Blue Plaques, which were started over 150 years ago across the capital. Politicians, scientists, musicians, sports stars, authors and creatives have all been commemorated, and out of the 933 of such plaques in London, the area with the second largest amount (175 of them) are in Chelsea.
